Privacy Is Just an Illusion

The article I read for my independent research is called "The Surveillance Society" and it is written by Davis Von Drehle. The article was basically capturing the idea that our private lives are slowly vanishing and the line between private and public "is as porous as tissue paper." The reason for this thin gap between the two is because of how rapidly technology and surveillance is growing. The article also pointed out something that really stuck to me. It talked about how our private lives were not always private, because there could have been someone else listening or looking at what you were doing and saying, just in this age it is becoming a whole lot easier to snoop into people's lives. The limits on how much data you can store are becoming smaller and smaller and all of the data that you do have can now be kept and stored forever. It is becoming so powerful that even Google knows what advertisements would interest you. The part that blows my mind the most is that people are willing to loose all of their privacy, including myself, and we do loose our privacy every time we take a picture or yelp a restaurant. This article actually opened up my mind a lot and gave me so much more information on the topic at hand. I feel like I am slowly becoming an expert because of all the research and conversations we have had about it and since it seems to be impossible to keep up with the internet, it is nice to keep up with the information about what is going on around us. Also all of this information is giving me several ideas about what to incorporate into my paper. The article was super helpful to me, so if anyone wants to read it let me know. I know that finals are next week which has most of us, if not all of us, pretty stressed out. Just remember don't procrastinate and keep pushing, before you know it all of the hard work and studying will have paid off.

  1. I disagree about what you say about your private life not being so private because someone else has been watching you. I don't think that the person who was looking at your private conversations or information was really interested in what they saw. Just as Fletcher said in class, we're boring, so there's not going to be much that will catch someone's attention. So I don't think we should worry about others looking through our private lies.
