A bit of advice.

Tip #1: Don't Procrastinate.

Being a senior is extremely stressful. I remember just hearing that word would give me anxiety. Since school has started I've been overwhelmed with questions. Will I get accepted into college? Will I pass all my classes? When's the SAT? What happens if I fail and etc.. But the fact of the matter is, If you get everything done, then you won't be so stressed.

Tip #2: Get your homework done.

I understand that this is a stressful year, and senioritis has definitely kicked in. But sadly, there is no excuse to slack off. Sometimes it's way easier to just avoid studying or even doing your homework but in the end what do you really get besides a bad grade, unnecessary stress and a disappointing look from your teachers?

Tip #3: Don't be afraid to try new things.

If you haven't already join clubs or sports. High school is a one of a kind experience. Go out and meet new people. Go to football games, or to dances, or maybe get more involved in pep rallies and assemblies. It won't hurt to stand up and cheer or even dance along, although it may be funny, most of us will cheer with you. Even though these things may seem corny, at the end of the day you're going to regret it. You can't rewind time so have fun while you can.

Tip #4: Save your money

Before senior year started, we all got a yellow paper with cost for senior year on it. (If you don’t have it I'm sure they have extras in the office) There's a list of majority of the events that we can participate in throughout the year. Some are optional  like Homecoming and some mandatory such as getting a cap and gown. This year is going to be extremely expensive, if you haven't already noticed and it’s only the beginning. So instead of blowing $100 on some fancy shoes, or clothes. Consider saving it and paying off something school related.

Tip #5: Don’t be so hard on teachers

I know that certain teachers frustrate us beyond no repair, but that is no reason to get angry and disrespect, argue, or fuss with them. Yes some of them are unorganized, lazy or just plain boring but we have to deal. I’ve realized that getting angry with certain teachers won’t make the class better, but instead make it more hostile and that teacher won’t be as lenient when it comes to make up work or failed tests. Just remember, if and when you’re angry with a teacher just count to 10, smile and walk away. You’ll end up less tense and seem less disrespectful, and your teacher will have more respect for you as a person. Patience is key.

Tip #6: Apply for scholarships, FAFSA, and Cal grants

If you plan on going to a 4 year college next year you might want to consider signing up for scholarships, Financial aid, or Cal grants. They all aid you in paying off school. And like Pat Dean said the sooner you apply the better the outcome of being approved. There are thousands of unused scholarships out there. I recently submitted a 140 character personal statement for a scholarship pledging to not text and drive. It may have been only $1500 but it didn't hurt me to apply and if i win that’s extra money to help pay off my tuition.

  1. I totally agree with the getting all your homework done tip. Since freshman year, I've always started my homework right when I got home so that I could make sure I had time to finish it all. Also, I think I applied for that scholarship too to pledge not to text and drive!

  2. About the whole homework thing, I find myself wanting to slack off, but I know that doing my homework is crucial. Thanks Adara for reminding me. Guys if you feel overwhelmed, take it one assignment at a time. And make sure you don't wait till the last minute in order to start your assignments. Do it ahead of time even and you will feel a great weight off your shoulders. For those of us that have Ms. Pinkwasser, make sure to start on the project early so that you have it out of your mind. Also guys make sure to turn in all of the assignments due in ERW : PS D2, letter, and CA #4- we have a Friday grace. Vocab and blogging is due on Friday as well. Remember that we are also getting tested on the previous vocab words as well.

  3. This is truly great advice for one to succeed but carry on to college also. I should maybe try to consider taking in this advice. My main problem is procrastination but this year I have really stopped procrastinating which is a good thing but I still have to eliminate it completely. I know that this is our last year and we might have the feeling of not wanting to try anymore but should. To not be so hard on teachers we should make sure that we control senioritis!

  4. you're right adara , being a senior is extremely stressful and so is all the work that comes along with it. Procrastination is everyone's number one enemy and it's really up to us to get rid of that really bad habit. Sometimes I get home and all I want to do is sleep because I'm so tired of staying up the previous night doing necessities and seniorites starts kicking in. However, we must stay focused and get things done for our own good to not have that pressure we feel when we procrastinate.

  5. Yes Adara, being a senior is extremely stressful. The year we have all been waiting for our entire lives. Now that it is finally here we don't really know what to do. We start to get lazy and start to slack. Senioritis starts to kick in, but if we are on top of our work we will be fine. All the pressure is on us now to go to college, take the SAT, still be involved in activities and still get good grades. Procrastinating doesn't help the stress of senior year at all, it adds to it. Even though I work well under pressure all of these assignments at once can get very overwhelming. You are very right that if we get all of our work done first and then go and enjoy other activities life would be better. We won't have to stress and scramble all of this work in at once. Just know that everything will be fine and we are going to be okay. Soon enough we will be out of high school wishing we had never left. All in all I think I am ready for the life God has prepared me for. I will have fun in high school while I still can and enjoy this little bit we have left and not rush it.

  6. These are all really good tips, and I agree with the comments above as well. All students should have this in mind, especially now. First tip applies to a lot of students, myself included. Finishing your work early will take a lot of the stress off your shoulders, leaving more time to do whatever else you want.

  7. This is really helpful advice to use for us seniors, especially me. To be honest, I barely know anything about college and any way on how to apply for them. Sometimes I act as if I know what I’m doing when I go to college, that I know what degree to get or what to apply for, but really I don’t know what I’m really going to do. This is really a huge help for me due to the fact that I can learn what to do while and after I’m in High School.
